Camp Ngaruawahia.

Last week the year 8’s went on camp at Ngaruawahia Christian Youth Camp. Arriving at camp with joy and laughter hoping that it would be fun. The group I was in was Waingaro A, with some of my friends. To start off camp we went on a huuggee hike up through the mountain. It was very tiring, and long. After the long hike, I couldn’t wait to jump in the pool.

The highlight for me would have to be the flying fox. This is a long cable suspended above the ground. Attached to the cable is a place for you to hold on. One end is set high above the other end and when you grab on you slide, quickly, to the other end. At first I was scared but when I tried it I couldn’t wait to go on again. I was scared because I thought I was going to drop in the middle of the lake, luckily I didn’t. I wish to do it again.

The thing I didn’t like at camp was waking up early and going for runs. The first morning we ran, we had to do 3 laps around the campsite. It was very tiring I couldn’t be bothered to do the last one so I walked away. I was happy on the last morning because we didn’t get to go for a run, and we slept in a little longer.

The last day we had to clean our entire cabin and toilets. Time had past it was time to go back home. We were suprised when the teachers told us that we were going to the pools before heading back home. It was a lot of fun, especially the slides. Finally it was time to pack up and head back home. I couldn’t wait to sleep, cause I was really tired.

I was really happy when we got back to school, but sadly I had to wait for my bags because the other bus had broke down. Camp was pretty fun. I hope to go again and have more fun again.

Year 8 camp.

Finally it’s the time for the year 8’s to go on the last camp of the year. The place we are going is Ngaruawahia Youth Christian Camp. I can wait to go, but unfortunately I have already been there so its not a first for me.
I just check the weather for Hamilton and Waikato, and sadly it is going to be rainy this whole week. I'm sure we can still have fun with the weather like this. Even though it might be bad to play in the rain.
Weather for Hamilton/Waikato.

I am still keen on going and hoping that there will no dramas and fights with anyone.  I'm really excited to go because I won't be at school and i’ll just be with my friends. It will only be 3 days but I will still miss my family.

Thanks to Vanila for helping with my work. :D

Tamaki Transition Day.

It was the time of the year for our year 8’s to go to Tamaki College and look around some of the classes and school. The subjects we went to was Science, English and Music. The dean for the year 9’s Miss George split us up into 3 groups. Then some of the prefects of the school came and took us around the classes.

First we went to Music class. Our teacher was Mr Telefone, he told us to write a rap or song. In that class we got split up as well to write a song. Our group wasn't very successful, it was hard to write it because we didn’t have much ideas for lyrics. We had to include things about our community, school and ourselves. Once our group got up and performed it, we just stood there like we were idiots. Well but it was fun in a way.

After that we had something to eat and then off we went again to our next class English. To be honest it was pretty boring. We had to write a poem about a animal, I picked a leopard. I done anything because there was nothing else to do. After we finished writing our poem we had to record it.

Up next was Science. That was the best of all. We learnt how to make Hokey Pokey out of sugar, golden syrup and baking soda. First we put our bowl of sugar and golden syrup on the Bunsen burner. We had to keep stirring it until it started to boil, then we could add the baking sugar. Once the baking sugar was added it started to rise and change colour. We took it off the burner and ate it, it was burnt at the bottom and you could still taste the baking sugar. It tasted alright, but it tasted yuck as well.

The transition was over. We had to go back to school and do our normal things. But the transition was fun, can’t wait to go to a new school next year.

Australia.

Last week our class had to find a article to read and then make a presentation about the country it was in. The story I read was about Homelessness. It said that Australia has the most homeless people in the world. So that's what we done, hope you enjoy.

Swimming Theory.

Two days ago some of our class went to the netball courts where the swimming pool was. But sadly I didn’t swim, because I didn’t bring my togs. So Mr Harris gave us some work to do. We had to write about being safe in the water if you're in danger.

One thing we had to write about was “Help”. If you fall out of your boat and you're feeling cold. So you have to cross your hands over your chest and then you will be warm. The other thing we wrote about was “Huddle”. Huddle is the thing when you fall out of your boat and your with other people then you have to get into a circle and hug each other. The smallest one of all has to be in the middle so he or she won't freeze to death.

This helped me because if something happens to me like that when i'm out on sea I can just do “The Help and Huddle”. It was great doing this.

Manaiakalani Film Festival.

Once again the Manaiakalani schools have come again for another Film Festival. This year is the 5th annual. We again went to the big screen in Sylvia Park. The intermediate part of our school went to the 2:00 pm session.

We arrived at the cinema with everyone sitting down waiting for the films to start. Once we were all ready cozy in our seat’s they finally played them. Some movies were really entertaining but some were boring as well. Our class entered a movie, it was called “From The Inside”.

My favourite movie was called “The Test”, It was made by some of the students in room 18 at our school. I liked it because it was funny and hilarious. It made me laugh the whole way through. My other favourite was “One Direction, Tamaki College”. It was also funny.

The film Festival was really fun. I enjoyed myself a lot. Our movie was alright, but not all that. (If you get me). Well I hope that next year will be better and alot more fun.

True-School Graffiti.

James was a normal boy who minded his own business and did everything by himself. He never liked doing what the other boys do. There was a new boy who came to school, he looked like a new guy. But then Jason got to know him, he wasn't a very nice person. He was just like the others, but he was very funny thats why Jason liked him.

One time they got into to trouble for spraying Dereks shoes with spray paint. They were in big trouble, so they got detention every Saturday. The Saturdays were fun because they got to do graffiti work. They became very interested in graffiti art work, so they kept getting detentions.

Months pass by, they were becoming artists. But they didn't like getting detention because they had other consequences as well. They stopped getting detention and just drew in their books and stuff. One day the principal asked them if they could decorate the school hall. The detentions were worth it, they loved doing graffiti art.

Our Balloon Experiment.

Today in class we have done some experiments on balloons. It has been a fun experience. Our teacher bought some balloons, skewers and a bottle of dish washing liquid to school to help us with experiments.

Our first experiment was to try and put a skewer through our the balloon with out it popping. We dipped the skewer into the dish washing liquid and then put it through the balloon. My first try was all right, it went through one end but then popped when it got to the other. I had many try but didn't succeed, that was pretty sad.

Our next one was to try fill the bottle with a balloon, We had to put the balloon on top of the bottle and then blow into until it was filled. I had a go at it but it was to hard, but then our teacher Mr Harris poked some holes into to it and it was much easier. But we still couldn't fill it up.

That was all the experiments we done. But then at then end we just played with the balloons. Thanks Mr Harris for the fun.

Ella and Daniel.

There was a girl named Ella, she had been bullied at her previous school and so she wanted to move. Her parents agreed to do this. When she walked into the school gates of her new school, people started staring at her. Some were jealous because they saw that the head boy was looking as well.

School was kind of the same as the other one, but she had friends who would stick up for her. There was a rumour that the head boy Daniel, had liked her. The other girls heard about it, and so they thought of plans to make her go away. They would bully her, ask for fights, and threaten her, but nothing stopped her from going away. Her and Daniel started becoming closer, and so they got more frustrated.

Daniel and Ella were finally going out. That was it, the girls wanted her out. They made school hell for her. But she didn’t care, Daniel would always take care of it. A little while later, she didn’t want him doing that any more she wanted to face her own fights. During lunch she went straight up to them, and said that nothing is going to make her go away and if they carried on with that she would call the police. Weeks had pass by, she noticed that the girls had stopped. Nothing came between her and Daniel any more.

School felt peaceful for her when they had stopped. She loved her new school, her friends, and obviously Daniel. She didn’t want to move any more, she loved it here.

Nice Day For The Beach.

I was looking outside the window and said to myself “Wow, its a nice day to go to the beach”. Firstly I had to ask my parents if I could go and they said Yes! I called up my friends and asked if they wanted to come. Obviously they all did. I couldn’t wait, it was so hot, I just wanted to have a day out.

Once we arrived we dropped everything and ran straight to the Ocean. Ahhh was what I felt once I jumped into the cool nice water. Going out was the last thing I wanted to do, but I wanted to play a game. I asked them if they wanted to,  we ended up playing touch. I didn’t mind, unless we got to play something.

So we went out and played on the grass. I was running for the try line but then I tripped up. I think I sprained my ankle, it was hurting. My friends helped me up. They laid me down on a chair, I told them I was alright and they could go.

My friends started to play Volley, because touch was getting boring. I was pretty upset because I didn’t want to miss out on the fun. But I had to sit down and relax my foot. Hours later my foot started to hurt, I didn’t know why. So I called up dad and told him to come pick me up. I was gutted because I didn’t get stay and play with my friends.

It was something worse than a sprained ankle, but i didn’t know what it was. So my dad took me straight to the hospital. Today ended up being one of the worst days of my life so far. I didn’t want to be in a hospital for my holidays, I wanted to be with my friends.

Free Speech.

This week I have been learning  "Russia and Saudi Arabia may block YouTube". This happened because the American's put up a video which offended the Islam people. They went to the streets and set fire to house, buildings and cars.

The film triggered them to protest against US embassies and other targets in the Middle East and around the world. The American's refused to take the video down, that's why they have been attacking them.

Roller coaster Ride.

In our class we have been writing narratives. This is one I have written.
<--- Here's a comic strip I have drawn.

Goodnight I said to my mum. I took off my robe and wore the best clothes I had and waited for my friends to call. We were going to the theme park, it was dark and freezing cold. They called me up and told me to meet them outside. I crept out the window and got into the car. And off we went, to the theme park.

I was really having fun. Until we went onto the rollercoaster. Only a few of us went on the ride started I was scared to death, I didn’t want to go on I regretted it from the beginning. I was screaming loud, tears were coming down my face. The loop was coming up, I just wanted to go off. I was screaming out “Nooo”. When we got up to the loop, the ride had stopped.

We were all scared, they couldn’t make the ride go again. News reporters had come with their cameras and stuff. I wondered if my mum was watching this. All of a sudden out of nowhere came a man who came and saved us. He brang us down one by one, but no one knew who he was. Some of us got interviewed from the News Reporter, I was one of them.

That was the end of it. We all went home, I snuck back into my room. My mum was standing there, she looked mad at me. All of sudden she ran up to me and hugged me. She was happy that I was safe, she wanted to look for the dude to thank him. But in a way she was angry at me as well for sneaking out. She saw me on the news. I was happy to be home, she told me to ask her first instead of sneaking home.

The Photo of my Cat.

Trying to catch my cat as it is playing everywhere wondering if he would stop. Finally it stopped I went to go and grab it but it started to bite and scratch me. I scream oouuuccchhh, and let it go. “Ugh this is going to be a long day” I said.

As I tried to find him, I hear him crying. He was stuck in the basket, I took him out and tried to take the photo. But he was too fast and ran off. Can’t believe he was so energetic, nah he probably didn't want to take the photo. I was taking lots of photos of him, but he just wouldn’t stay still.

The time had past, I just wanted a photo of him. He was still jumping around, I couldn’t catch him. I noticed him walking over to the kitchen, I think he was hungry? So I went over and fed him, once he finished he went over to the couch. He went and lied down, he had finished playing. He finally fell asleep and thats when I took the photo.

Hey guy, this story is imaginative but yeah hoped you like my imagination :))

Smoking Not Our Future !

In our class we have been learning about smoking and what it can cause to your body. Here is something that you should know, so you know the effects it can cause to your body.

Dangers of Smoking

Most people know that smoking can cause bad effects to your body. Taking risk’s can be a good and a bad thing. But in smoking its a different story, because you can die.

Smoking can cause lung cancer, heart disease and other illnesses. Nicotine is an addictive drug, it tricks the brain to thinking that it feels good. Many people say that it is better to not smoke at all. Smokers are more higher at risk of death than non smokers, because it can cause health problems.

70% of people know that they are at risk but still smoke, as the nicotine changes the way you feel. Smoking can sometimes shorten your life up to 10 years. Men are 23 times likely to get lung cancer, and women are 13 times. The risk can be really bad, even if you know what consequences it holds.
I believe that smoking is bad for you. But you can’t judge anyone about it because its their body. My opinion is to not start smoking at all, because its hard to stop and a huge risk.

The London Olympics !

The first Olympic Games were held in Greece in 770 BC. The Olympic Games are every four years. This year it is in London, it’s been the third time the Games have been held there.

New Zealand was brilliant in the Olympics, winning 13 medals. New Zealand are coming 16th in the medal count with 5 Golds, 3 Silvers and 5 bronze. The 1st person to win a Gold Medal for New Zealand was Ted Morgan, for the welterweight class in boxing at the 1928 Amsterdam Games.

Heaps of people get medals, everyone tries to get to the Gold, sometimes it never happens and sometimes it does. USA is coming 1st in the medal count with a total of 104 medals. Not far from USA, is China coming 2nd with 87. Michael Phelps will now be retiring from the Olympics, he won himself 22 medals this year, with a record of 18 Golds.

The Olympics was very fun. I enjoyed watching it, and can’t wait until the next one which will be held in Rio. I liked watching the sprints. I hope New Zealand can do better and win some more next time.

A Summary of Jesse Owens !

There had been a lot of competitors in the Olympics, Jesse owens was one of the greatest olympians of all. Jesse beat all the odds, but hitler didn’t want Jesse Owens to be in the Olympics because he was Nigro.

Owen was the seventh child of eleven siblings. He was born in a small part of Alabama, even though he was born there he mostly grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. Jesse’s real name was James Cleveland but his teacher couldn’t understand him because of his accent, so she started calling him Jesse. One day of school he was playing on the playground and the junior high coach took him off the playground and set him for work and the running track.

In 1936 Jesse arrived at the Summer Olympics in Berlin. Even though Hitler’s Germans hated him he fought hard and won a total of 4 gold medals. Jesse was a man of great strength.

His coach Charles Riley had changed his life and history. He had attributed his all of his Olympic success to him. He had made another world record in the relay, it wa his last event in the Olympics. He went out with pride and success.

Jesse Owens was a great man. He is someone which people can look up to him as a hero and a role model.

Another medal :)

This is ANOTHER GOLD medal I got for doing my homework. This was also given to me by my teacher Mr Harris. The more medals I get the more better chance that I will receive for the CHAMPIONSHIP !

My Gold Medal again !

This is another GOLD medal that I got for doing my work in class. This was given to me by my teacher Mr Harris. I hope to get more in the future.

Making Decisions

Our task is to write something about making decisions and which way we choose them whether they're wrong or right.

Lately I've been making my own decisions. Making decisions are hard, it can affect the people are us. Sometimes people get pressure to make decisions even though they know its wrong. Decisions can lead you to astray, because that’s how life is.

The past weeks we have been going to the Life Education caravan, where we have been learning to make decisions. We watched a few videos which show us people making choices on their own, and whether there right or wrong.

Sometimes I make the right choices, but not very often. But now i'm going to try STOP THINK before I make my decisions.

Thanks to Vanila for checking my work.

Nature or Nurture !

What makes a great athlete? Well I don’t know for sure. But my opinion is it’s your natural talent and working hard to accomplish your goal.

Athletes need to be strong. The best option to have strength is working out and exercising. Working together is an important thing to sports. It takes a lot of work to have to ability to play a sport, but you should keep practising and Go For Gold.

To me athletes need both natural ability and hard work to become a great athlete. The most important thing is to keep training and try your best.

Going For Gold !

When should you go for gold? You go for gold when you are participating in a event, like the Olympics. Every single person who is participating in the Olympics had trained all the time to make them get elected for the NZ team.

If you are trying to go for gold you should at least practise most of the time, even if its something new to you. Practising can make you achieve in things you like.

You can go for gold in school, work or even in life. You can go for gold by studying, working hard to get a better job and trying to become a better person.

When you go for gold you try your best!

When Is The Right Time To Swear ?

There Is No Time For Swearing.
It was official that residents in the a small town in the U.S had voted to ban swearing. A $20 fine will be given if they swore in public. The community thought it would be  a great idea for the environment, and it would be safe for the children in the community.

There shouldn't be a time for swearing. Swearing can affect some people, if your bullying them or even if its a joke. Swearing can be a bad influence to the little kids, because when they grow up they might get involved with problems involving swearing.

From my point of view I reckon that swearing is unnecessary. Swearing is bad for you and shouldn't be allowed, sometimes people swear because they get angry at someone. They should at less make a new name for the words.

All About Me !

Hi my name is Athena, the things I like doing is playing with my friends and family, especially rugby. The thing I don’t like that much is sometimes going to school, and waking up in the morning.

This year I am a year 8 at Pt england School. I am 13 years old, and in room 19, my teacher is Mr Harris. At school I like to join most of the sports, so far I have been in Rugby, Softball, and right now I am trialing for Hockey. During the year I am going to try join each sport and hope to get in.

My life at home is normal, I live with my nana and my cousin Bobbi Grace. I am a Samoan,Tongan and many more … My mum had seven kids, only of them is my real brother, his names Jaguar and all the rest are half. I am the only girl out of the kids, that was the same as my mum. My family sometimes have dramas, but at the end we thank each other. At home I like to listen to music and do my own thing. Most of all I like having fun.

I would like to say thanks to all the people who have helped me and supported me through my life, especially my nana.

Art Alive

This term our school is studying about “Art Alive”. I was so happy to come back to school. The things I wanna do this term is paint, draw murals, and make sculptures. I’m really look forward to learning more about art and how to draw better, I cant wait for this term.

Thanks to Vanila for helping me !

Vincent Van Gogh's Life

Vincent Van Gogh was famous for his paintings, but only after he died. Only one painting was sold during his lifetime “The Red Vineyard”. He was considered a Dutch-Post Impressionist painter. These artists wanted to use art to express and show feelings not just what they saw.

He was born in Groot-Zundert, Holland on March 30, 1853 and died on the 20 July, 1890. During his early adult life he worked for a firm of art dealers. Van Gogh worked unsuccessfully as a clerk in a bookstore, an art salesman, and a preacher in the Borinage.

Van Gogh first used dull colours but after seeing the work of other Impressionist painters, he started to use brighter colours. He was influenced by the works of Cezanne and Gaugin.

Between November 1881 and July 1890, Van Gogh painted almost 900 paintings. Some of his famous paintings were “Starry Night”, “Sunflowers”, “The Potato Eaters”, and many more. His brother Theo was the one who inspired him to paint. Van Gogh firmly believed that to be a great painter you had to first master drawing before adding colour.

After he died he had left a lot of Artwork behind. Most people today still appreciate his work. His life was really depressing for him, he was so depressed that he cut his ear lobe off. But I reckon he is one of the best artists in the world.

A little something about a Cardiac Arrest

Our class has been learning about a man who has died from a Cardiac Arrest. His name was Alexander Dale Oen, his death was very unexpected, as he is a 26 year old man who was really fit. You get a Cardiac Arrest from the abrupt loss of heart function  in a person who may or may have been diagnose with heart disease. The time and mode of death is unexpected, it occurs instantly or shortly after symptoms appear. People who have heart disease are at higher risk for a Cardiac Arrest.

Thank you to Vanila for helping me with this piece of writing !

Games People Play !

People like to play lots of physical sports. Do you ever play sport? Which one’s your favourite? Is it Rugby, Basketball, Touch or even Softball? Sports is something you do to keep your fitness up, as well as getting better at it.

Rugby is a physical sport, it involves lots of tackling and running. Lots of people enjoy playing rugby, especially me and my friends. Another sport that involves tackling is Rugby League. The thing that’s different is when you get tackled you get back up instead of the other team being able to get the ball off you.

Another physical sport is Touch. It’s kind of like league but its touch instead of tackles. Touch involves a lot of touching and running. Touch can keep your fitness up with all the running around and the trainings. I enjoy playing touch, because it’s really fun and exciting.

I like to a lot of sports, but over all my favourite is Rugby, but my less favourite sport is Netball.
Thanks to Vanila for helping me with my work ! :)

Camp Respect !

This week all the Year 7&8’s had another fun camp on our school grounds. It was called Camp Respect. The groups were Respectronicz, The Respect Squad, The Respectorz, Team Respect and many more. I was in Respectronicz, my leaders were Miracle and Selena. It was to the 12th to the 14th, so it was pretty short but fun.

Our first activity was The Amazing Race, it was fun but the weather was quiet bad. Next we done Box Fit, some people from the company came and taught us some small techniques about boxing I really enjoyed it. After that we done cooking, we cooked some scones they turned out to be yum.

We done a lot of activities during camp like The Amazing Race, Box Fit, Cooking, Swimming, Kayaking, Zumba, Ping Pong and many more. On the last day of camp we all went to Swim-arama. We enjoyed our time there I wished that we would of been there longer. The thing I enjoyed at Swim-arama was seeing the warriors come and watching them swim. GO THE WARRIORS !

Duffy Theatre

For the past few years the Duffy Theatre had come to our school and perform plays for us to enjoy. Finally the Duffy theatre came to our school again, for the first time this year. I was so happy they came, because I couldn’t wait for another exciting play they perform.

After morning tea most of the senior classes went to the hall for the Duffy show. When we got to the hall everything was all ready set up. Everybody was sitting down waiting for the show to start. Finally the show had started, first they introduced them selves. The story for this show was about “The Best Book In The World”.

The story was about Duffy who found a book called “The Best book In The World” in a box for a garage sale. While Duffy was reading the book, Scruffy always wanted play rugby him but Duffy always had a way to make him go away. The thing that made it funny was the characters, because they were played by only three people and one guy acted like a girl. Marvel was the main character in the book, she was soo hilarious.

There were lots of scenes in the show, but my favourite one of all was the Book Shop. I liked it because one of the actors acted like Sonny Bill Williams, he was getting a present for his daughter Emmy, the book he chose was “The Best Book in the World”.

Treaty of Waitangi

The treaty of waitangi s a treaty first signed on 6 February 1840 by representatives of the British Crown and various Māori chiefs from the North Island of New Zealand. The Treaty established a British Governor of New Zealand, recognised Maori ownership of their lands and other properties, and gave the Maori the rights of British subjects. The English and Maori versions of the Treaty differed significantly, so there is no consensus as to exactly what was agreed to. From the British point of view, the Treaty gave Britain sovereignty over New Zealand, and gave the Governor the right to govern the country. Maori believed they ceded to the Crown a right of governance in return for protection, without giving up their authority to manage their own affairs. After the initial signing at Waitangi, copies of the Treaty were taken around New Zealand and over the following months many other chiefs signed.

Our First Netball Session

On the 9th of February the weather mad me feel good to be alive, Room 19 went off to the courts for our first Netball lesson of the term. Arriving to the courts made us so hot it made us sweat like smelly pigs. Finally all the fuss was done, we started to do our netball lessons. First our instructor introduced her self, her name is Liz.

The first part of our lesson was, our passing skills. We all had to get on a dot or a cross, I ended up on a cross. After all that we had to face the person next to us and practise our passing with them. Then we done bounce passing, and finally we done our running skills. We had to run up, and the other person throws the ball to us as we jump over these things. We were all trained up, it was time to start the real game.

Finally the game had come, it was time to get serious. We split up into six groups, there were three courts and two teams played on each one of them. It wasn’t like the real Netball, but the rules were the same, the different thing was we had to try bounce the ball onto four big dots in the corners, instead of shooting it into hoops. The game had finally finished, my team won against the opposition, it was soo fun and enjoyable.

Netball was an amazing experience, I never thought it would be that fun as I am a Rugby Player. I actually enjoyed my self, my favourite part was the game, because we won and it was fun to play with my friends.

School's Back !

Finally the holidays had ended, it was time to go back to school. Walking into school yesterday from a long holiday, made me feel real happy as I am now a year 8. I was soo excited as I entered the school ground because I hadn’t seen my friends in a long time. I noticed some of the past year 8’s were here, I was so happy to see them. My friends came up to me and said “Hi” then we started to talk. It was a great way to start the first day of school.

When the bell rang everyone made there way to the hall, to listen at what Mr Burt had to say. After all the talking had finished, team 5 went off to the street. The teachers talked to us and how we had to be great role models, and how we had to properly behave ourselves for the whole year. Mrs Nua also called out our class for 2012.

The class I am in is Room 19, and my teacher is Mr Harris. On our first day we had to write down the names of the people we wanted to sit next to, I ended up with my friend Helen. I hope that this year would be a wonderful year, as it is the last year for the year 8’s.
